NHFF Screenplay Committee/Granite SoFFA host reading at RiverRun Bookstore 10/18

New Hampshire Film Festival Screenplay Committee Presents:

A Reading by Five-Time Emmy Nominated Writer Susan Kim and Edgar Award-Winner Laurence Klavan at RiverRun Bookstore as part of Festival’s Weekend Program

The New Hampshire Film Festival’s (NHFF) Screenplay Committee invites the public to hear playwright, TV-writer and author Susan Kim and novelist, short story writer and playwright Laurence Klavan read from their latest work, Wasteland, the first in a trilogy of dystopian young adult novels published by HarperTeen. The free event will be held Friday, October 18, 5:30 – 7:00 pm, at RiverRun Bookstore, 142 Fleet Street, Portsmouth.

Kim and Klavan have partnered up in earlier works including the graphic novels City of Spies and Brain Camp, published by First Second Books. With Wasteland readers enter a post-apocalyptic U.S. where at 15, people marry; at 17, they reproduce, and at 19, they die.

However, according to the HarperTeen website description, “an early death isn’t the only doom waiting around the corner: Everyone is forced to live under the looming threat of rampant disease and brutal attacks by the variants—hermaphroditic outcasts that live on the outskirts of Prin.

“Esther doesn’t care that her best friend, a variant, is considered ‘the enemy.’ She doesn’t care that Levi, who controls the Source, is the real enemy and might send his Taser boys after her if she makes one wrong move. Then she meets Caleb, and just possibly, she might have a chance at salvation.”

The evening is co-sponsored by RiverRun Bookstore, which has proudly served as Portsmouth’s independent bookstore, and which now has a location in Kittery, Maine.

It is also co-hosted by Granite SoFFA—the New Hampshire Society of Female Film Artists—which hopes to provide light refreshments. The NHFF Screenplay Committee will also introduce the winning writers of the Script Competition—author George Guthridge and filmmaker Deborah Schildt. The two scribes will take center stage the following morning at 9:00 for the second of the Festival’s Coffee Chat sessions, this one hosted by Susan Kim.

The Screenplay Committee also acknowledges and thanks its sponsoring partner, Star Island Corporation, which has generously donated an all-inclusive two-week writer’s residency to its retreat center in the summer of 2014 for the wining screenwriters.  For more information about the reading, please visit the RiverRun Bookstore events listings at, or visit the NHFF website at
